Understand, protect, care wisely

Why skin care is more than “just put cream on it”
Many horse owners first reach for familiar home remedies when they notice skin changes – zinc ointments, zinc–cod liver oil creams, or thuja tinctures. These products can calm the skin in the short term, but they can also irritate it quickly if they’re too oily or contain alcohol. What matters is watching the skin closely and not overwhelming it with too many substances.
Veterinary treatment targets the cause. Care stabilises the environment: the skin barrier, moisture levels, the micro-milieu. They complement each other, one does not replace the other. Gentle, consistent care helps stressed areas stay calm after procedures or irritation.

3. Understanding sensitive areas
Some regions of the body are particularly vulnerable:
– Belly line and inner thighs
Friction, sweat and insect contact
– Corners of the mouth
Moist skin, little hair protection
– Skin folds and tail base
Pressure, movement, friction
These areas can develop thickened skin, hardened patches, crusts or scabs. Sometimes subtle, sometimes sensitive. What matters is checking them regularly and not reaching for harsh products right away. Often it’s enough to keep the skin clean, reduce friction and give it time to settle.

5. FAQ

Skin care doesn’t need miracle promises. It needs patience, observation and products that do no more than they should. If you’re trying to figure out the right approach right now: stay calm, look closely, be consistent. Just like in your relationship with your horse.
